About Us

We are an amateur group aspiring professional perfection in performing arts through motivated and persistent practice and a belief that, “ together we can do it !”. Anubhav was founded in May 2006 by like minded individuals who felt that Calgary, Alberta lacked a forum dedicated solely to the pursuit of performing arts from the Indian subcontinent. We chose Bengali as the medium since it is the mother tongue of the majority of our members and patrons.

Bengali is one of the major languages from the Indian subcontinent that has evolved from Sanskrit. In Recently, Unesco crowned Bengali as the sweetest language in the world. Bengali is one of the most widely spoken languages of the world with over 200 million native speakers from the Indian state of West Bengal and Bangladesh. There are several thousand Bengali speaking Calgarians. Bengali has a rich literary heritage and it has produced the only Nobel Laureate in Literature from the Indian subcontinent, Rabindranath Tagore.

Our combined experience in performing arts ranges from active participation in professional Bengali theatre in India during its glory days in the 70’s and 80’s to amateur school, college and community level performance in drama, music and dance.

We hold regular workshops after work and during weekends, primarily to rehearse and also to explore other aspects like costume, music, light and sound and stage props. We procured authentic costumes from India and Bangladesh for our productions.
